Carmel’s Leading Man: Herb Heron and the Forest Theater
Reading Room, Harrison Memorial Library

Library Event

Shakespearean-trained actor Herbert “Bert” Heron burst onto the Carmel scene in 1908. Two years later he persuaded developer James Franklin Devendorf to donate several lots for a theater and in the span of four months oversaw construction of the Forest Theater and starred in its opening show. Opinionated, outspoken, and always entertaining, Heron went on to serve as the theater’s most passionate advocate for the next fifty years, starring in numerous roles and writing original plays for its stage.

Heron was also a prolific letter writer who corresponded regularly with creative luminaries of the day such as playwright Mary Austin and writer George Sterling. Join actor Taelen Thomas and SJSU Professor (emeritus) Susan Shillinglaw for a unique evening of readings from Heron’s letters interspersed with history from the early days of Carmel when the growing village hummed with artistic spirit and new civic pride. Artifacts from the collection of the Henry Meade Williams Local History Department at the Carmel Public Library will be on exhibit.
