How will I know when I can start using my new address number?

Notices with a City seal will be sent to the mailing address on file for property owners.

Please do not post your new standard address number until after you receive an official notice from the City.

Property owners of multi-unit buildings are responsible for notifying tenants of their address number and posting individual unit identifiers.

Will I have at-home mail delivery?

No, at-home mail delivery will not be implemented.

Can I still pick up my mail at the 5th Ave. post office?

Yes, the current “centralized delivery” mail system will continue with PO Box mail delivery. PO Box delivery will continue to be the only form of standard mail delivery in the City.

Are at-home mail delivery and street address implementation the same thing?

No, the City has separated at-home mail delivery from street address implementation. The process to implement at-home mail delivery and street address assignments are two separate processes; the City has no intention of engaging the USPS for the at-home mail delivery process.

Who is responsible for assigning street addresses in Carmel-by-the-Sea?

The City’s Planning and Building Department is responsible for street address numbers assignment.

Can I keep my current house name sign posted?

Of course! Please note that the current CMC Signs standards will still apply to house name signs.

Will implementing street addresses force the downtown Post Office to close?

No. The City has purposefully communicated with the USPS to reinforce its intention to keep the 5th Ave. US Post Office open and operational for the community.

Will USPS Cluster Box Unit Mailboxes (sometimes called “gang mailboxes”) be installed?

No. Cluster Box Units will not be installed because of street address implementation. The USPS would use the already established Central Delivery System of PO Box mail delivery using the existing infrastructure and developed process.
