The City has an exclusive franchise agreement with the Waste Management Company for trash and recycling collection, which occurs once per week in the residential district and daily in the commercial district.

Households are issued yard waste, mixed recycle and trash cans.  Due to our large number of second homeowners, the City contract calls for Waste Management to collect the cans from wherever they are housed and return them to the same location.  This avoids the need to take the cans to the curb as the City ordinance states that cans can only be out 24 hours before and/or 24 hours after pickup.  The additional benefit is that cans which remain at the street for a prolonged period seem to advertise that no one is home, thus residential safety is enhanced.

Waste Management provides special days for residents to dispose of extra waste that does not fit into their regular carts.  During clean-up week, you may dispose of up to 7 extra bags or 7 extra 32-gal cans of trash along with your regular household waste. Be sure to have your waste at curbside by 6 a.m. on your regular garbage pick-up day.

Clean up weeks for Carmel-by-the-Sea:   January 4-8, April 5-9, July 5-9, October 4-8
